Accelerated aging, damaged or mutated cells, broken-down tissue, and an overloaded immune system… WHAT?!? Pretty scary!! These are some of the things that can happen when our body is short on antioxidents.
When I started hearing more and more about antioxidents lately, I thought I better look into what all of this means for living a healthier life.
Without getting too science-y, the body forms both free radicals (molecules without a partner) and antioxidents (the partner). Some free radicals arise normally during metabolism. Sometimes the body’s immune system’s cells purposefully create them to neutralize viruses and bacteria. Environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides can also spawn free radicals. When there are too many free radicals for the body to pair up, the damage occurs.
I’m not ready to let those extra free radicals have their way so I make sure my body has “partners” for all the loners. The best way to create “partners” is through foods with high antioxidents. These can be blueberries, dark chocolate (!), pecans, and cranberries… but the food containing the highest antioxident count is the Wolfberry or Goji berry. Because of this I have begun adding wolfberries to my daily routine in the form of really tasty juice. If you are looking to add juice, just make sure it is a nice dark color so that it is full of wolfberries, not fillers. Plus… yum!
